Students and teachers of the Bilingual Program at IES Virgen de Covadonga carried out different acctivities and projects to conmmemorate the International Women's Day 2017.
First, team of teachers organised a contest to design and create our own LOGO to celebrate this important date in our High School.
Many students, from the Bilingual Program or not, took part in the contest using their creativity and different software and digital devices to design and create their logos.
The name of the High School and a slogan or quote related to the matter were required to participate in the contest.

The winner of the contest is PAULA ROMERO LOMBARDÍA, from 3º ESO A. This logo became a sticker which students delivered during the break time, so that all the school community had their sticker to commermorate this day. Happy International Women's day!
Why refugees leave their homes, what
challenges they face, or how welcoming Spain is to those seeking asylum were some of the questions that the
students in 4th ESO addressed through this project work.
Thinking about the world we live in and reflecting on our fundamental human rights were the goals of this task. The conclusions are shown in the posters above.
In February, the students of the Bilingual Program took part in some actvities to celebrate Black History Month.
They investigated about African- American scientists, sportspeople, matemathicians, politicians, civil rights activists.... They studied their lives and achievements and they found out impressive facts about their lives and the complicated situations they or their ancestors had to live many years ago. Then, they published short biographies in the form of posters, creating an interesting 'Personalities Gallery' which decorated he first floor landing in our High School for the past two weeks.

It was established as a Negro History Week in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson, a historian who wanted to ensure that important contributions made by African American men and women throught history would never be forgotten.
Two important birthdays helped organizers choose February as the time to celebrate African Americans. Two US leaders that helped African Americans gain equality, President Abraham Lincoln and human rights acitivist, Frederic Douglass.
Extended to a month- long celebration in 1976, Black History Month is an opportunity to emphasize the history and achievements of African Americans.
This year, Bilingual Program students and teachers have decided that we would like to join this celebration integrating Black History in our classrooms. So, with the help of our language assistant, Diana, we are doing different activities that will bring us closer to the African American history, from the terrible time of slavery until the present times.
In Technology class we focused on African American inventors or scientists. Diana told us the story A Weed is a flower, about the life of George Washington Carver, a scientist who worked with peanuts and helped Southern farmers.

We learnt about San Diego Comic- Con thanks to Diane, who came from sunny California and is helping us discover plenty of new things about her country and culture.
Comic-Con is an entertainment and comic convention held annually in San Diego. We were amazed to learn about it. Did you know it isthe largest convention of its kind in the world? There is something for everyone: comic books, science fiction and fantasy film and television, horror, animation, manga, toys, video games, webcomics, collectible card games, fantasy novels...! After Dian's presentation the students in the 1st Yer created their own comic stories and presented their ideas to the class. This is part of the result of their work.

SAFER INTERNET DAY
Safer Internet Day is celebrated on February 10th. Last year our students made a video rendition showing the dangers of sharing your information on the internet.This school year our 2nd year students in the bilingual programme made comic stories which show the terrible consequences of making a mistake online. I hope you will enjoy reading the comics and learn from the mistakes. Your safety is not a game.

ETWINNING PROJECT (2nd ESO A)
The second stage of the etwinning project which our second year students in the bilingual section are working on consists of showing the other schools involved in the project the school rules, that is, what students are and are not allowed to do at school.
Since they love drama, they went a little overboard in their performance; and as you may appreciate in the video, when they become teachers they are much stricter than teachers themselves.

This school year, our second year students from the bilingual section are taking part in an eTwinning project called "Welcome to my School".The aim of this video project is to present schools across various European countries. The students will speak in English and present their school and their school life. As part of the first stage of the project students have to make a video to present their school to the other countries participating in it (France, Italy, Turkey, Greece, Poland, Estonia and Spain). As you know,Halloween is over!
As it was explained in the previous post we organized some activities during this week, in this video we have a summary of all of them. We hope you'll like it.

It's almost Halloween time, and we are getting ready for the spookiest day at the school!
This year we are hosting a Halloween Door Decorating Contest.
Classroom doors should be decorated by Friday 23rd October and will be judged by teachers and staff through a voting that will decide on the best ideas.
On Friday 30th, we will have workshops with Halloween crafts, games and stories and a Halloween performance with dance and theatre by the students in the 2nd and 4th year.

Last school year there were just seven first-year students in our bilingual section, this year we have thirteen new second-year students, some of them coming from a different school. Therefore, our old students were curious about the new ones, that is why they decided to ask them some questions about their lives and the reasons why they enrolled in the program.

We are very glad to present the film Dancing the world, which is the result of the project we have carried out throughout the year together with our mates in the Bilingual team from Mieres.
As you may know, in the film a group of friends travel through time in a journey whose goal is to explore part of the history of dance around the world. The students from Mieres are the travellers, while our students act out the people at the different countries and perform all the dance shows in the film.
Leaving aside some technical difficulties related to the fact that all the work was recorded with a mobile phone, we are proud of our students' work, of their enthusiasm and lack of prejudice. We worked as a team, with our minds and bodies, we grew up and learnt a lot together, and we had good fun.
With our thanks to the Compañía Nacional de Danza, and to the pupils' families for their support in this experience. We hope you enjoy it.
On 20th May we celebrated Anglo-American Day in our High School.
Our American language assistant Verónica, and British Sonia Taylor, assistant at IES Sánchez Lastra, were the protagonists and true souls of this special day, full of activities that gave the students the opportunity to compare British and American language and culture. After a Welcome Talk, we shared a hilarious masterclass in which the assistants brushed up on our knowledge of geography, history, food, sports, festivals and much more ... with a small competition at the end :-) Then, we moved on to the different workshops where students could explore British/American maps, deconstruct stereotypes, learn vocabulary differences in meaning and spelling, compare accents and enjoy a small exhibition of realia from the USA and the UK. After that, it was the time for music: Sonia and Vero taught the students from different groups how to dance a choreography for an American and a British song. They which later performed in front of their mates, making everybody laugh and have a good time.
And last but not least... we had a potluck party where we could taste the delicious American and British dishes that our students and their families had cooked, following the recipes given by their English teachers. Thank you all for your collaboration, everything was so tasty! All in all, a great day to remember. Have a look at the photographs, what's your favorite moment?

We have been very busy with the rehearsals of the last choreographies and now we are almost ready for the release of our film "Dancing the World"...
It's going to be an exciting event for all those who took part in this extraodinary experience so we are preparing the red carpet for such an important occasion.
We feel nervous and proud and eager to show the final result of our project.

In our intention to weave relations with other schools around us, and looking for opportunities where our students can speak English and use the language to comunicate with others, we have organised this activity with the teachers and students at IES Jerónimo González.
Students in the 3rd year from the Bilingual Section at both schools visited each other and showed their guests around, explaining about the studies, facilities, activites and other curiosities about our schools. Everything in English of course!
After that, in El Entrego we played a Human Bingo, which encouraged the students to mix freely and break the ice. And we finished in the playground with a Running Dictation, a fun activity that gets students up and moving while they practise all four skills and have a good time working together.
In Sama, we did a Quiz and then our assistant Verónica prepared a Jeopardy game, which the students played in teams, showing their knowledge of American culture with great enthusiasm.
Well done guys, it's been a pleasure working with you, we hope to meet again soon!!
On a rainy Wednesday morning, we took the train with our students in the 3rd and 4th year ESO Bilingual and got off in Avilés to pay a visit to the Niemeyer Centre. There, we went on a tour around the complex in the company of Manuel, our guide, who told us about the facilities of this modern cultural centre by the estuary of Avilés. We learnt that, grateful
for the Prince of Asturias Award received in 1989, Oscar Niemeyer
collaborated on the 25th anniversary of these awards with the donation
to Asturias of the design of this place, which has experienced
problems since its inauguration but is still an artistic reference in
our region. We could see an exhibition by photographer Tim Parchikov and in the Dome we admired the original work with shape and colour of artist Cruz Díez. We were amazed at the auditorium, whose seats do not make a distinction between social classes, and then climbed to the towerand observed the use of abstract forms and curves in this project, one of Niemeyer's distinctive features. As a complement, the students participated in the workshop Art-Kids- Tectos, where they created their ideal city with cardboard boxes and paintings, using their ideas and imagination.
